Every week we get asked the same thing: "How do I get my business to show up on ChatGPT?" This article is the answer. Not the fluff answer. The actual playbook we use with Trustify clients.

The Uncomfortable Truth

You can't pay to feature your business on ChatGPT.

OpenAI does not sell placement. Anyone claiming to sell "ChatGPT ads" is lying. The only way in is to build the signals AI reads.

First, understand how ChatGPT picks businesses

ChatGPT names businesses using a mix of three inputs:

  1. Training data. What was written about your business on the web when the model was trained. Most business recommendations come from this.
  2. Retrieval-augmented search. Live web crawls when the query needs fresh info. ChatGPT is increasingly doing this for local and time-sensitive queries.
  3. Trusted third-party sources. Business directories, review sites, comparison articles. These get weighted higher than your own site.

Your own website matters less than most business owners think. What matters most is what other authoritative sources on the web say about your business.

The 6-step playbook

This is the exact order we run with new Trustify clients. Skip steps at your own risk.

01

Audit your current AI visibility

Before you build anything, know where you stand. Take the top 10 queries your buyers actually ask AI (not the ones you wish they asked). Run each one on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI, Claude, and Gemini. Note which businesses are named. Note whether yours is.

This gives you your baseline citation rate. You can't measure progress if you don't have a starting number.

02

Build presence on third-party authority sites

This is the biggest lever. ChatGPT weighs what other sites say about you more than what your own site says. Get mentioned on:

  • Industry-specific directories (bar directories for lawyers, RealSelf for aesthetics, G2 for SaaS, etc.)
  • Comparison articles ("Best X in Y" listicles)
  • Review roundups and buyer guides
  • Trusted news sites in your vertical
  • Wikipedia-adjacent authority sources

Not every mention has equal weight. AI prefers older, more authoritative sources over new SEO listicles. That takes real relationship-building, not a Fiverr order.

03

Move your review sentiment

AI reads your reviews and forms an opinion. Not just the star rating. The actual language. If your Yelp reviews contain the phrase "waited too long," AI reads that as a wait-time problem and factors it into recommendations.

Three actions here:

  • File policy-based removals on reviews that violate platform terms (fake, off-topic, harassing).
  • Respond to every negative review with substance. AI reads your responses too.
  • Encourage detailed positive reviews. "Great service!" is worthless. "They handled my personal injury case in 45 days and I got a $75k settlement" is gold.
04

Verify listings across 40+ platforms

AI trains on structured business data from directories. If your Name/Address/Phone is inconsistent across the web, AI doesn't know which version to trust. Get verified listings across:

  • Google Business Profile (mandatory, and rare to be missing)
  • Yelp, Yellowpages, Bing Places
  • Every industry-specific directory in your vertical
  • Chamber of Commerce, BBB (if applicable)
  • AI-native indexes (Perplexity's business index, others emerging)

Consistency matters more than volume. One verified listing is worth 10 inconsistent ones.

05

Publish topical authority content on your own site

This is where SEO and AEO overlap. Long-form, in-depth content on your website answering the questions your buyers ask AI. ChatGPT's retrieval layer will find these when running live searches.

Target the actual buyer queries. Not "our services." Not "about our firm." "How much does a personal injury case in Miami settle for?" That's a query. Write the answer.

06

Measure citation rate monthly

Every month, re-run your top 10 buyer queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI, Claude, and Gemini. Track your citation rate (how often you're named) as a percentage. If it's not moving after 60 days, one of the three Trust Engine layers isn't being fed.

This is the metric that matters. Not your Google ranking. Not your website traffic. Whether AI names you.

Realistic timeline

Here's what most Trustify clients see:

  • Days 1-30: Baseline audit + setup. Nothing has moved yet.
  • Days 31-60: Content and signals get published. Citation rate starts inching up on lower-competition queries.
  • Days 61-90: First real wins. You're now named on some queries you weren't before.
  • Months 4-6: The compound effect. You start showing up on high-value queries. Traffic and bookings follow.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Chasing all AI platforms at once. Focus on the platform your buyers actually use. For most B2C, that's ChatGPT and Google AI. For B2B, add Perplexity.
  • Ignoring reviews. Your review sentiment is one of the top three signals. If you're 3.8 stars with defensive owner responses, AI is not going to recommend you.
  • Writing surface-level content. "10 tips for choosing a lawyer" is a Google play, not an AEO play. Write depth. AI rewards specificity.
  • Trusting agencies that guarantee top-3 in 30 days. Not possible. Either they're lying or they're spamming loopholes that will get you penalized when OpenAI catches up.
