If your business shows up on Google but not on ChatGPT, you have an AEO problem. This guide is the fastest way to understand what AEO is, why it matters right now, and what to do about it.
What Answer Engine Optimization actually means
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your business named when AI systems answer a question. When someone asks ChatGPT for the best personal injury lawyer in Miami, AI names three firms. AEO is what determines whether your firm is one of them.
Traditional SEO gets you into Google's ten blue links. AEO gets you named in the answer itself. Different game, different playbook.
The "answer engines" AEO targets are:
- ChatGPT (OpenAI) · the biggest, most-used AI. When a customer says "I'll ask ChatGPT," this is it.
- Google AI Overviews · the AI-generated summary above the blue links on Google.
- Perplexity · the fastest-growing AI search engine.
- Claude (Anthropic) · the second most popular general-purpose AI.
- Gemini (Google) · Google's standalone AI.
Each of them decides which businesses to recommend based on different signals. AEO is the discipline of moving all those signals at once.
AEO gets you named when AI answers a question.
Not clicks. Not impressions. Named. That's the win state.
Why AEO exists now (and didn't 3 years ago)
Three years ago, when a customer needed a business, they typed into Google, scanned the top five results, and clicked one. That behavior fed the entire SEO industry.
That behavior is now dying. 63% of buyers under 40 ask AI before Google. They don't scan ten blue links. They read one answer. And they trust it.
This has three downstream effects for any business:
- The click funnel is compressed. Instead of 10 businesses competing for a click, 3 are named as the answer. If you're not one of the 3, you don't exist for that customer.
- The buyer arrives pre-sold. When AI recommends you, the customer already trusts the recommendation. Close rates on AI-referred traffic are consistently higher than paid traffic.
- SEO alone is no longer enough. You can rank #1 on Google and still be invisible to a customer who asked ChatGPT first. Ranking on Google no longer guarantees the buyer sees you.
This is why AEO became a category. Because the buyer's behavior changed, and the businesses that adapt first win.
How AI decides who to recommend
Here's the mechanism, simplified. When ChatGPT (or any AI) is asked "who's the best X in Y," it doesn't do a live Google search and pick the top result. It uses a combination of:
- Training data. What was written about your business on the web at the time the model was trained.
- Retrieval-augmented search. Real-time web crawls when the answer needs fresh info.
- Trusted third-party sources. Structured data from directories, review sites, and authority listings.
- Sentiment signals. How the business is talked about across the web, not just the star rating.
AI weighs all of these together, filters for freshness and authority, and produces an answer. If your business shows up strongly on all four signals, you get named. If you're missing one, AI defaults to a competitor who has all four.
At Trustify we call these signals the Trust Engine, and we group them into three layers:
- Layer 01 · Content. What AI can find written about you across the web. Case studies, structured data, mentions on authority sites, comparison pages, review roundups.
- Layer 02 · Signal. Your review sentiment on every platform AI reads. Not just the star rating, but the language pattern. AI reads reviews and forms an opinion about your reputation.
- Layer 03 · Discovery. Verified listings across 40+ platforms AI trains on. Directories, citations, authoritative business sources.
The Trust Engine is what Trustify moves for clients. Miss one layer and AI picks your competitor.
SEO vs AEO in plain English
SEO and AEO are complementary, not interchangeable. Here's the cleanest way to think about it:
- SEO ranks your website on Google. Wins you a place in the 10 blue links. Buyer scrolls, decides which link to click, and lands on your site.
- AEO ranks your business as an answer on AI. Wins you a mention in the AI's spoken answer. Buyer reads three names, picks one, and books.
SEO cares about your website. AEO cares about what the web says about your business. Two different targets.
Most SEO agencies were built for the old buyer behavior. They optimize your site pages, build backlinks, and chase Google keywords. They don't typically move sentiment signals or third-party mentions. That's why SEO firms can't do AEO. It's a different signal set.

What "doing AEO" actually looks like
At Trustify, an AEO engagement typically runs three months minimum. Here's what happens month by month:
Month 1: Baseline + setup
We start with a full AI visibility scan. We test your business against your industry's most common search queries on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI, Claude, and Gemini. You see exactly where you rank today, which competitors are being recommended over you, and what's missing.
Then we set up the Trust Engine across all three layers: content plans, review sentiment analysis, and discovery signal audit.
Month 2: Push + remove
Content publishing hits the sources AI reads. Review removals get filed on platforms with policy-violating negative reviews. Discovery signals get seeded across authoritative directories. This is the heavy lifting month.
Month 3: Measure + compound
Rankings start moving. We run a second AI visibility scan against the baseline. You see the exact change in citation rate on your keywords. Month 3 is usually when the momentum becomes real.
Months 4-6 are where the biggest gains show up. AEO compounds · the signals we move keep working after we stop pushing them, so results tend to accelerate rather than plateau.
"They built a query set of the exact questions our buyers ask AI, ran a scan across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, and handed us a scorecard in the first week." · Rocco, Polt.AI
